With the holidays fast approaching I find my self scrambling to make gifts for all. My goal is to try and hand-make all my gifts this year. Some of the gifts will be mittens, scarfs and hats. I had made a frilly scarf for my Mom’s birthday in October and have gotten a lot of feed back from the rest of my family requesting some.
Today I finished another one. This one I did differently. I did a knit then perl stitch so it lays flat. It is a simple back and forwards so the frills are on either side. I found that this makes a thinner and longer scarf then before. It also takes longer then the ones I did before because I kept needing to readjust it on the loom. With this yarn I found that using a loom made it easier because it made it pretty impossible for the yarn to slip. When using needles I found that it tended to slip off.
The other scarf I did the fist time was on a small 16 peg loom. When you make it this way it is a bit shorter then the grey one but looks a lot fuller too. When stringing it on the loom you just skip every other one so you are only using 8 pegs. Also as you knit it you are actually knitting it backwards. What you end up with is a tube of an inside out scarf. Once you get to the last set of stitches I used thread and tied it off so that I could then just flip it the right side out. This style normally just takes an hour or two. It takes less concentration then the other because I was using the loom correctly.
If anyone has any question or suggestions feel free to comment. I may make up a tutorial later on how I made the loomed scarf.
